Filled with dragons, witches, damsels in distress, and heroes, these tales stay in the mind children for years to come. However, these young listeners are getting much more than a happy ending. Fairy tales such as The Goose Girl, The Three Little Pigs, Cinderella, and Snow White one can find theories of psychology. Erik Erikson`s theories of social development as well as Sigmund Freud`s theory of the map of the mind and his controversial Oedipal complex can be found in many fairy tales. Within every fairy tale there lies a hidden lesson in psychology. In 1963, psychoanalyst Erik Erikson developed one of the most comprehensive theories of social development. The theory centers around eight stages of psychological development. One of the stages, autonomy versus shame and doubt, occurs between the ages of one and a half and three years old. In this stage toddlers develop independence if freedom and exploration are encouraged. Autonomy itself means having control over oneself. At any given moment, our behavior, including this sense [autonomy], is influenced by the outer environment and our inner psychological state (Restak 268). If they are overly restricted and protected they develop shame. Shame is the estrangement of being exposed and conscious of being looked at disapprovingly, of wishing to bury one`s face or sink into the ground. (Blake 115). The key to developing autonomy over shame and doubt lies in the amount of control. If parents control their children too much the children will not be able to develop their own sense of control in the environment around them. However, if the parents provide too little control the children will become overly demanding. Gaining autonomy from one`s parents is the topic of a once famous Brother`s Grimm story, The Goose Girl. The story is of a beautiful princess who is to be married to a prince chosen by her mother. The girl along with her maid was sent to the castle of the prince. On the way the princess gave her maid a golden cup and asked for a drink. The maid took the cup and told the princess she would no longer be her servant. Again this happened and this time the maid realized her power over the princes and forced her to switch horses and dresses and to tell no one. Upon arrival at the castle the maid was married while the true princess was forced to tend to the geese in a pasture. In the pasture while tending geese with a boy she let her pure gold hair down. The boy wished to grab it. However, the princess summoned the winds and would not allow the boy to touch her hair. The boy calls the king to witness this daily event. This reveals the truth and the maid is killed. The true princess marries her prince and they rule their kingdom in peace. This tale shows the consequences of a childish dependence clung to for a long time. The princess trusts her mother who then sends her off to get married. Because she was protected as a child she did not develop autonomy. She was very dependent on her parents. Her dependence is then shifted to her maid who robs her of her title. The princess fears the maid and goes along with her lies. When the princess is in the pasture herding geese her partner wishes to touch her hair. She stands up for herself and will not allow this. The boy degrading her is the turning point in her life. The happy solution came about by the girl asserting herself and her dignity in not allowing the boy to touch her hair. The Goose girl learned that it is much harder to be truly oneself, but that this alone will gain her true autonomy and change her fate. One of Sigmund Freud`s theories centers on the map of the mind. He divided the mind into three parts. The three parts are the id, the ego, and the super ego. The id is known as the pleasure principal. He believed Our entire physical activity is bent upon procuring pleasure and avoiding pain. (Restak 110). The id only wants to seek pleasure. It is mainly concerned with discharging built up energy. The second part is the super ego. The super ego keeps control over the id by causing guilt for being bad and pride for doing good.

Angela Carter: â€Å"The Company of Wolves† (1979, excerpt) Men are powerful, strong, dominant. But what are women's strengths? Women all over the world were fighting for their rights, and this inspired female authors to put their thoughts into stories. Women could be manipulative, deceiving. They could control men when they wanted to. So why were the men in control of the world?By rewriting â€Å"Little Red Riding Hood†, Angela Carter turns the norms of the fairytale upside down, and thereby shows the development in contemporary society. In â€Å"The Company of Wolves†, a young girl beats the most manly of all creatures: the werewolf. The short story is chronological and is told by an omniscient third person narrator with a clear narrative voice:†Children do not stay young for long in this savage country†(p. 22). This gives the reader an insight in the hu ntsman's thoughts as well as the girls, and we get an understanding of the decisions taken by the characters.The short story has intertextuality, as it's a rewriting of the fairytale â€Å"Little Red Riding Hood†, but it's uncharacteristic as a fairytale as it does not start with the usual â€Å"once upon a time†, and does not end with â€Å"they lived happily ever after†. Angela Carter has chosen to rewrite a story almost everyone knows to make her message easier to understand. But the language in the story is quite formal. This makes it more difficult to understand properly, and it shows that Angela Carter wanted to address the story to the educated part of society.The formal language is also a way of pointing out that women can actually write in a high level of language. The short story's setting is midwinter in a forest. The winter embodies the color white, the color of innocence. The color white is used frequently in the story as well as the color red to pe rsonalize the girl. The white color symbolizes her innocence and the red color represents a grown woman, her lethality and female passion in contrast to her innocence and sensibility. The girl is the main character in the story, as she undergoes a clear development from a young girl to a grown woman.She starts out as a young and innocent girl, casually walking through the forest on her way to her grandmother's house. But as she meets the young huntsman, the man, the wolf, it starts snowing. The huntsman threatens her innocence symbolized with the prelude to a blizzard. At the end of the story, just as the girl has gone to bed with the huntsman, it stops snowing (â€Å"The blizzard died down†, p. 27). The white snow, her innocence, has died down, and her innocence is lost forever. Angela Carter is using a woman as the hero in the story, which is quite unusual for a fairytale.She was trying to break away from the norms of the fairytale by letting the girl use her female strengt hs to beat the werewolf. She is deceiving and manipulating the werewolf, and ends up sleeping with the werewolf instead of being eaten. The huntsman is Angela Carter's symbol of masculinity. In this story men are shown as beasts, just like the huntsman. He's a werewolf, he's hairy, he's â€Å"carnivore incarnate† (p. 25). When the girl was walking through the forest, â€Å"†¦ she heard the freezing howl of a wolf† (p. 23), (â€Å"†¦ but she saw no sign of a wolf at all, nor of a naked man†, p. 23).By adding this, Angela Carter implies that a naked man and a wolf are the same thing, (and thereby she lets her thoughts as the writer be apparent). The huntsman eats the grandmother. He is literally feeding on women, just as Angela Carter indicates that men are feeding on women in society. Most of the women at that time were still cooking, cleaning and taking care of the children at home singlehandedly, and could proceed to take care of their husband when he got back from work. Red is not only used to symbolize the huntsman's lethality (â€Å"†¦ eyes the size of saucers, saucers full of Greek fire, diabolic phosphorescence†, p. 25), (â€Å"There was a faint trace of blood on his chin†, p. 24), the girl's red dress shows how the girl is equally lethal to the huntsman.By writing this story Angela Carter is focusing on women's strengths, such as how the girl uses manipulation and deception to beat the werewolf. She indicates that a woman can take a man into her mer cy in any given situation (even when he's about to eat you). But does Angela Carter really think manipulation and deception are strengths? Virtually all of us have experienced insight at some time in our lives, including world-class problem solving by famous scientists and mathematicians (Wallas, 1926). Insight can be seen as a form of intellectual ability. That insight can occur with important real-world problem solving makes its potential enhancement all the more critical for ISR and C2 applications because non-routine problem solving is the norm (e.g., A2AD situations). As such, funding of sports facility under such method of bond issue is seen to have been often criticized and condemned mainly due to fact that the process for such way of funding often associates economical burden for the people. Bonds have become among the common methods used by cities or counties in order to raise the funds required in order to fund the sports facilities that are to be constructed (as cited in Sawyer, 2006). The trend of the use of bonds to fund this particular project has risen over the past decade, according to Fried (2005), which shows the popularity and the feasibility of this particular funding method. Formally defined, bonds are described by Howard and Crompton (1995) as a promise by the borrower (bond issuer) to pay back the lender (bond holder) a specified amount of money, with interest, within a specific period of time (as cited in Masteralexis, Barr, & Hums, 2004, p. 260). Among the examples of funding the construction of sports facilities through the use of bonds can be lifted from the experience of the Centerburg Ohio Public School. The bonds issue happened on October of last year after the approval of the voters is solicited by the Board of Education for the proposed plan of 1.72 million dollars property tax bond in order to finance the construction of the school facilities that is to be constructed outdoor. The primary purpose to which the money is intended involves the improvement of the sports facilities constructed outdoors and for the nearby restrooms and drinking fountains. A voting system serves as the means through which the proposed plan of property tax is approved. The constituents are considered to be participatory in this particular decision-making process wherein they are the ones upon whom the votes are gathered from as to whether the proposed property tax bond is approved or not in order for the project to push through. The voting has been proposed to take plae on November 2007 in order to make the final decision for the proposal. This serves as the first step towards the construction and implementation of the plan. Among the advantages of having the fund gathered from the bonds is primarily because of the speedier process associated with earning the needed finances for the project. This would speed up the process compared to waiting for funding from the public government which would require several processes as prescribed in the formal budget hearing. To this extent, the purpose of the project is also achieved in a faster manner. According to the Centerburg school board president Ed Lambert, the bond issue helps improve the sports facility that enhances the performance of the student athletes and increases the safety of the students. As the project pushes through, the students would have appropriate training areas instead of using alternatives that poses risks to their safety and health. With this, the enhancement of their performance and the achievement of a heightened sense of sports esteem is given at a faster pace than through other sources of funding. Furthermore, another advantage of this proposed property tax bond will definitely uplift the standard of Centerburg public school as a producer of quality students and athletes due to the fact that modern sports facilities will enable the school to produce outstanding student athlete, which can be a superstar in their own chosen sport. This enhances the reputation and the capability of the school in being a holistic learning institution that caters to the needs of the students in all respects whether it is on the academic setting or in the physical aspects. Among the disadvantages would be that the constituents of Centerburg has to sacrifice in order to pay the additional taxes that would have to be levied by the local government in order to slowly finish paying for the constriction of the public school outdoor sports facilities. This is true for all inpiduals whoa re eligible to pay for local government taxes whether they may be using the sports facilities or they do not benefit from it at all. It serves as a shared responsibility among the community which does not exempt anyone. However, it remains that the benefits and advantages of this particular project outweighs its disadvantages. It is seen more as a helpful project instead of a burden to the public because of the nonfinancial benefits that are earned by the community especially in encouraging the youth in engaging their selves in sports than in any other form of activity such as drug abuse. Despite this particular advantage seen in the use of the proposed property tax bond to fund the said project, it did not push through primarily because of the publics lack of information regarding both the financial and non-financial consequences of the project. It would have been better if there is a massive campaign that appeals to the public regarding the project. Moreover, it should have targeted the people who are directly involved in the project and who would benefit from it such as the parents of the children, more especially the athletes who are involved there. On the other hand, there are other available means to finance the said project aside from the ones proposed. The use of an intensified information dissemination regarding the project would have rendered the project more successful as compared to how it turned out since it already has the advantages that is required in order to achieve a successful outcome.
